The gym was dark once again, with only the faint glow of moonlight whispering through the broken window. For a moment it all seemed so⦠normal. It was just Polk Elementary. They were just hanging out like they always did, though inside the gym instead of on top of the roof.
But Val was no longer with them.
Shawn shattered the silence, screaming as he looked around at the others, his eyes wild, âWho lifted it? Who?? Why?!â
The parachute lay at their feet, deflated and lifeless.
Jason took a deep breath, âI think it was me.â
âWhy would you do that? We almost had her!â Shawn cried.
âI donât know. One minute I was standing by the wall and my foot got caught under the edge of the parachute, so I moved it, andâ¦â
âWe have to go back,â screamed Shawn, dropping to the floor, and grabbing the green canvas.
Doug ran across the parachute and leaned down, jerking the fabric out of Shawnâs hands. He dropped it on the floor and looked down at Shawn, still crouching.
âJust hold on. We go to a different place every time. How do we even find her?â
Shawn jumped to his feet and balled his fists. He took a step toward Doug, his eyes wide and bloodshot. âItâs your fucking fault! Youâre the one that wanted to stay longer!â
Shawn swung his right fist, hitting Doug on the side of his jaw. Doug dropped to his knees with a hard thud on the wooden floor. His hand flew to his face, and he looked up at Shawn incredulously.
âWhat the fuck, man?â
Shawn shook his hand then clenched it again as he took another step toward Doug.
Doug held his arms up. âIâm sorry, but how was I supposed to know a giant hand was gonna grab her? Dude! Seriously, stop!â
âStop!â Eric jumped between them, facing Shawn. âWeâll go back in. Sheâll be there, she has to be.â Shawn stared at him until the rage drained from his face, then he sighed and looked at Doug.
âSorry, man.â
Doug nodded and climbed to his feet, still rubbing his jaw. âItâs cool.â
Angela and Jason watched in silence. She was also mad at Doug for wanting to stay, not that she would start a fistfight with him over it, but he was the one who wanted to stay longer.
âOkay, hold on letâs thinkâ¦â Eric said. âJason, you said your foot was under the parachute. So⦠it was along that one wall. Our feet must have all been touching it when we were trying to get Val through the window.â
âWhat does that matter?â said Shawn, pacing the gym floor and stopping every few feet to glare at Doug.
âWell, it matters if we want to all come back next time. Letâs figure this thing out. There has to be some kinda rules, right?â Eric said.
âHeâs right,â said Angela, as she walked across the canvas toward them. âWe were all touching the parachute edge except for Val when Jason lifted it.â
Jason, still standing on the other side of the parachute, lowered his head.
